Alliance Fall Expo Sale Brings Canadian Dollars, Carson City Silver and Rare Medals
Noted by Alliance Coin & Banknote · 747 reads
Alliance’s October 3 sale features more than 500 lots, including 1948 Canadian silver dollars, Carson City dollars and Chet Krause estate medals.

Unusual tokens and medals drew some of the strongest interest at Alliance’s spring “Odd & Curious” sale. That result sets an intriguing lead-in to the firm’s Fall Expo Sale on Thursday, October 3, where more than 500 lots will range across coins, banknotes and medallions, with several pieces described as new to the auction block.
The spring sale offered a clear measure of collector response: 94% of its 500 lots sold to 85 separate buyers. Two standout results came from exonumia and commemorative material. A possibly unique Canadian 1940 quarter counter-stamped for the Alaskan Canol pipeline project brought a hammer price of $275, against an estimate of $20–50. A choice 1919 pressed Large Cent marking the Prince of Wales’s visit to the Toronto Exhibition sold for $325, compared with an estimate of $30–60.
Those results sit alongside a familiar collecting pattern: buyers continue to seek conventional coinage, while pieces with an unusual story or scarce form can attract especially keen attention. A counter-stamp or pressed design can make an otherwise familiar coin distinctive, and the spring sale’s results show how that character resonated with bidders. The firm says the Fall Expo catalog will again include material for both traditional coin collectors and people drawn to tokens, medals and other numismatic specialties.
Canadian and American silver dollars
Alliance’s flagship auction of the year is scheduled for the evening of October 3 at the Toronto Coin Expo. The sale will be hosted on the firm’s iCollector platform page and will include more than 500 lots. Among the Canadian decimal coins, four 1948 Silver Dollars are listed in grades from Fine-15 to MS-60, offering a range of condition for collectors to compare within the same date.
American coinage will include a run of ten Carson City Silver Dollars in mint-state. The group gives bidders a concentrated look at coins bearing the Carson City mint mark, with the sale presenting ten examples together. The source does not provide individual dates, grades or estimates for these dollars, so those details will need to be checked in the catalog when it becomes available.
Banknotes and estate medals
The banknote section is set to include a complete denomination set of 1935 notes, extending through the One Hundred Dollar issue. It will also feature more than a dozen Specimen and Test note issues from the Elizabeth era. Together, those groups bring distinct kinds of collecting interest to the sale: one spans a full set of denominations, while the other includes notes identified as specimens or tests. Further particulars on individual notes are expected in the auction listing.
Alliance highlights its Token & Medal section as a particular strength, with Mint promotional pieces from the estate of Chester Krause. Krause founded Canadian Coin News and the Krause Publication empire, whose reference books are widely regarded by world coin collectors as essential library resources. Through visits to trade shows and conventions, he assembled a collection of obscure and scarce promotional medallions connected to the numismatic industry.
Most of the Krause estate pieces being offered are new to Alliance. That makes the group worth watching for exonumia collectors interested in material that may be unfamiliar even to regular auction attendees. The firm expects the selection to draw attention, though it has not supplied individual descriptions, counts or estimates for the pieces.
Preview and bidding timetable
Ottawa-area customers can see a preview of material from the sale at the September 8 Ottawa show in Westboro. Alliance expects the full sale to appear on iCollector by mid-September, giving bidders time to review the lots and place advance bids before the live broadcast from the Toronto Coin Expo on October 3.
For collectors planning to follow the auction, the catalog will be the place to confirm the identifying details that matter: individual dates, grades, note types, descriptions and estimates. The spring results give the unusual medal and token material a lively precedent, while the Fall Expo lineup brings together Canadian and American silver dollars, a substantial banknote selection and pieces from Krause’s collection. The October 3 sale should offer a broad view of the different ways collectors build a numismatic collection.
