Wave 13’s Robin pairs Earth 2 Dick Grayson’s classic costume with a compact build, cloth cape and comic-specific belt.

McFarlane Super Powers Robin #66 Brings Earth 2 Dick Grayson to the Line

McFarlane’s Super Powers line has made room for another take on Dick Grayson: Earth 2’s Robin, a character whose history separates him from the better-known Nightwing figures already in the range. The 4 5/8-inch figure is number 66 in the line and the final release in Wave 13. Its choice of costume gives collectors a distinct version of Grayson, while the familiar bright colors and compact proportions keep it firmly within the line’s style.

Why Earth 2 Robin kept the name

The character’s path begins with DC’s parallel-world storytelling. In 1961, Flash #123, “Flash of Two Worlds,” brought the original Flash, Jay Garrick, back into view by placing his adventures on a separate Earth from Barry Allen’s. The story’s success opened the door for more Golden Age heroes to return, with their earlier histories continuing on what became Earth 2.

That setup allowed its characters to age from their 1940s appearances. When Dick Grayson returned in 1967, six years after the original Flash story, Earth 2’s version was an adult and a member of the Justice Society. His Earth 1 counterpart would later use the name Nightwing, but this Dick continued as Robin. That difference gives the figure a useful place beside the line’s other Graysons: it represents a separate chapter in the character’s history, rather than another Nightwing costume.

The packaging doesn’t explicitly label him “Earth 2,” though the back bio points to that identity. Its mention of Justice Society Infinity is a specific reference to a later era of the character’s publishing history. The result is a figure whose identity comes through a combination of the bio and the costume, so collectors looking for that distinction will want to check both.

Costume and figure details

Earth 2 Dick Grayson first returned in a costume strongly influenced by Batman’s. This figure instead uses his second, more recognizably Robin-like design. The costume has an interesting crossover in its history: Earth 1 Dick Grayson wore it first during one of the JLA/JSA crossovers, before Earth 2 Dick adopted it as his own. He kept that look until his death during Crisis on Infinite Earths.

The figure has seven points of articulation and uses the line’s standard male body, based on the Flash mold. It’s the first time that body has been used for a version of Dick Grayson in this line. The choice looks well judged. The first two Nightwing figures used a larger base body, while this build sits more naturally beside the basic Batman figures. That scale relationship helps Robin read as part of the same display without losing his adult Earth 2 identity.

His head is a modified version of the Gold Label Nightwing sculpt. The sides of the hair have been removed, and the mask lines have been cleared away to make room for Robin’s wrap-around mask. It’s a thoughtful bit of reuse: the shared sculpt links the two Graysons, while the changes make the head fit this character. A new belt piece follows the design seen in the comics, and the cloth cape adds a different texture from the figure’s molded parts. It also comes across as one of the nicer capes in the line.

The paint scheme is bright and colorful, in keeping with the source design and the Super Powers look. The application is mostly clean, with little visible slop or color bleeding. Between the distinctive belt, mask and cape, the figure’s key costume elements remain easy to read at this scale.

A welcome surprise for Dick Grayson collectors

When McFarlane’s Super Powers line introduced a modern Nightwing, I expected that to be the extent of its Dick Grayson coverage. The later ‘90s and ‘80s Nightwing figures made the character a recurring presence, but another version seemed unlikely. Earth 2 Robin was an unexpected addition, and a satisfying one.

The design translates well into the line’s compact format, and the body choice gives him a good fit beside the standard Batmen. I’d still welcome his earlier Earth 2 costume as another figure, but this release already brings a clear historical distinction and a strong visual change to the Grayson lineup. For collectors tracking the different identities Dick has carried across DC’s parallel worlds, number 66 is an easy one to recognize and a fun addition to the shelf.
